Database Conversion

Are you considering a move to The Raiser’s Edge®? NetCommunity™? The Financial Edge®? Sphere? Salesforce.Com?

We get calls all the time from organizations that are looking to move to — or from — one of these common tools. The first thing we recommend to these organizations is that you have to find someone that really knows what they are doing, and not just with the data!  We have been in this business a long time and have strengths in the specifics of Blackbaud software. One of the main considerations for any vendor you consider using should be that they know as much about Development and Fundraising, as they do about moving data from point A to point B. It’s not just “data” to you — it’s your organization’s gold!

Pre and Post conversion work is critical

If the database conversion was done poorly or data didn’t get converted in a logical and useful way, then we need to fix the situation.  Post-conversion is a critical time. We often find teams that have been struggling with the data for years and due to a lack of training or understanding, the database was never well understood or maintained. If you have had high staff turnover, no written policies or procedures, or poor reporting capabilities — those can be fixed.

If you are considering a move away from a Blackbaud product, be sure to ask all the right questions of your potential new vendor before signing on the dotted line. Don’t throw the whole tool away if you can save it with a good scrubbing. It was a significant investment and if poor database policies have created an Raiser’s Edge Monster, then the same will happen with any other database as well. Give us a call and we will help you understand the potential risks and rewards associated with converting your database.

Bias? Absolutely. We freely admit that we have a bias towards Blackbaud products. However, we also understand that life is not one-size-fits all. Our reputation is built on making sure our clients get the most bang for their buck. That means either leveraging the technology you already have or helping you identify one that might fit you better.
